DOWNTOWN ALLEGAN SOCIAL DISTRICT

The City of Allegan is excited to formally announce the creation of the Downtown Allegan Social District after the approval was voted on by the Allegan City Council.

In accordance with Public Act 124 of 2020, this designation allows approved establishments to sell alcoholic beverages on their licensed premises to customers who may then consume the beverage from a clearly marked cup within a designated commons area of the Downtown Allegan Social District. As of December 7, 2020, two establishments (Schaendorf Brewing Company on Water Street and Tantrick Brewing Company, soon to be relocating to Downtown Allegan) have been approved to begin participating in the Downtown Allegan Social District.

The Downtown Allegan Social District is generally bounded by Cutler Street on the North, Chestnut Street on the West, the Kalamazoo River and State Street on the South, and Water Street on the East as seen on the map below.

“We are excited to work with others to foster a fun and safe environment for adults in Downtown Allegan,” said Kyle Heslip, brewer and co-owner of Schaendorf Brewing Company. “We are looking forward to this effort not only helping bars and restaurants during the COVID-19 Pandemic, but also helping increase the attraction of Downtown Allegan to potential visitors and customers.”

Customers who purchase their beverages from participating establishments may consume their drinks throughout the Downtown Allegan Social District year-round, seven days a week, between the hours of 11:00am-11:00pm. Just as exciting, retail businesses located within the social district may allow customers to bring those beverages with them while they shop. Those participating businesses are marked with a decal at their front entrance.

The Downtown Allegan Social District begins Wednesday, December 9, 2020. As of this publishing, Schaendorf Brewing Company is the only eligible establishment to have responded to the City of Allegan’s communications and obtain the necessary approvals from the State of Michigan.
